Halloween ComicFest: For those unfamiliar with Evil Dead, how would you describe its universe?

Frank Hannah: The Evil Dead Universe is a place where supernatural horror is blended nicely with silliness and humor. While evil “Deadites” are routinely conjured, battled and vanquished by our story’s hero and heroine, none of it is taken too seriously. Fans of the franchise love its campy fun, while knowing that equal care is taken in presenting its horror elements.

Halloween ComicFest: What exactly is a Dark One and why is it important for Ash and Annie to fight it?

Frank Hannah: A “Dark Ones” are god like beings that exist in a place called the Mirror Dimension. They live only to devour. While they are harmless to humans as long as they stay in the Mirror Dimension, any entrance into our plane of existence would spell certain death for mankind. Ash and Annie might be the only people on earth with the skills to stop them.

Halloween ComicFest: What’s the relationship like between Ash and Annie?

Frank Hannah: Ash and Annie have a love/hate relationship. Their relationship is initially based on need, but it evolves over time into a strong bond. Though there is a fun tension between them, it probably would never evolve into anything truly romantic.

Halloween ComicFest: What sets Evil Dead 2: Beyond Dead by Dawn apart from other horror comics?

Frank Hannah: To be completely honest, there are a lot of interesting horror books out there right now. I think what sets this book apart are the fans. The love the fans have for Ash and the franchise elevates this to a prestige project. I’d put my money on them every time.

Halloween ComicFest: What Halloween and horror-themed comics are you reading right now?

Frank Hannah: I haven’t been reading a whole lot of horror comics lately, but I have been re-reading my favorite horror novel of all time. It’s called Song of Kali by Dan Simmons. It’s probably the most horrifying novel I’ve ever read and it holds up with each subsequent read. A little side note, I came across the book in the late 80s after reading a magazine interview with William Peter Blatty, the author of the Exorcist. They asked him what book actually scared him. He answered Song of Kali by Dan Simmons. Look for it!

Halloween ComicFest: What are some of your favorite Halloween movies or monsters?

Frank Hannah: I love the Evil Dead films, the original George Romero Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead films. I especially love the original Poltergeist, Scanners and I have a soft spot for the Re-Animator films.

Halloween ComicFest: If fans enjoy Evil Dead 2: Beyond Dead by Dawn #1, what other comics would you recommend?

Frank Hannah: Well, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the next two storylines, Cradle of the Damned and Dark Ones Rising. I would also suggest looking at the selection of Ash Versus books we put out.
