Masters of Horror Comics: Preacher

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon were frequent collbaorators, having worked on series such as Hellblazer and The Punisher. It was from their creative partnership on Hellblazer that they went on to create Preacher, a 1995 series following the story of a Texas preacher Jesse Custer.

This horror series is about Custer's journey after a supernatural creature named Genesis--a product of an unnatural coupling of an angel and demon--possesses Custer. Genesis, as a product of both pure goodness and pure evil, is potentially the most powerful being in the universe; after this possession, the possessed Custer sets out to literally find God, who abandoned Heaven when Genesis was born.

Preacher remains one of the most lauded Vertigo titles. Reknowned author Stephen King said in the afterword to The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born he was influenced by the series. Outlets like IGN called Preacher the third-greatest Vertigo comic after Swamp Thing and Sandman, while Empire ranked Jesse Custer as the 11th Greatest Comic Book Character with the Saint of Killers ranked 42nd on the same list.

As we get raring for Halloween ComicFest 2017, now's the perfect time to discover the series that inspired the hit AMC show!
