Papercutz's Hotel Transylvania's Creative Team Talk Sinking their Teeth into this HCF Mini-Comic

In a world where monsters want a break from humans, where do they go? None other than Dracula's Hotel Transylvania, a human-free hotel. In the 2012 film, Dracula invites the most famous monsters in the world to celebrate his daughter Mavis' 188th birthday; all goes well, until the ordinary Jonathan shows up. The film was followed up in 2015 with a sequel, when this Halloween ComicFest 2017 all ages mini-comic takes place, as Dracula opens the hotel to humans after Mavis and Johnny have a son, Dennis.

Halloween ComicFest: What was it like to adapt the film into a comic with the amount of success that the film had?

Stefan Petrucha: Not exactly adapting the film, these are all-new stories, and it’s been a hoot! I’m a longtime monster fan, so I felt right at home, and the folks from SONY have been great to work with.

Allen Gladfelter: Another day in the office.  The challenge is to get the characters looking just right.

Who was your favorite character to work with in adapting Hotel Transylvania and why?

Petrucha: Tough to say, I like them all equally, but I think I’ll go with Griffin. I enjoy the challenge of coming up with jokes and situations for a character you can’t see.

Gladfelter: Drac, because he's the funniest.

Why should fans pick your comic first on Halloween ComicFest 2017?

Petrucha: Because it is the best and will make them the happiest. Why else?

Gladfelter: No comic delivers more skeleton bones than Hotel Transylvania.

What got you reading comics? What are some series you're reading today

Petrucha: It’s how I learned to read! My grandfather used to sit me on his lap and read me things like Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. At the tender age of six, I already knew words like “fortress” and “solitude.” By the time the Marvel Superheroes was on TV in 1966, I was hooked. More recently, I saw the 2000 ADdocumentary, so I’m re-reading the Alan Moore series, D.R. & Quinch.

Gladfelter: Comics taught me how to read.  Been reading comics since before I can remember.  My first favorites were the Chris Claremont/John Byrne X-MEN.  Today I read spooky noir books like the Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips CRIMINAL series, and the PARKER comics by Richard Stark/Darwyn Cooke, and GRAVEDIGGER by Richard Mills/Rick Burchett

What spooky Halloween titles would you recommend to new readers

Petrucha: Hotel Transylvania and… uh… did I already mention Hotel Transylvania?

Gladfelter: Well, you GOTTA read SCARY GODMOTHER by Jill Thompson and STITCHED by Mariah McCourt/Aaron Alexovich. They deliver the chills (while still being good for kids).

Why do you think events like Halloween ComicFest are great for the comic book community

Petrucha: Costumes and comics are a natural, a perfect way to support the medium and each other, in a fun way.

Gladfelter: Anything to get more comics into the hands of kids is a good thing!

What do you think comic shops bring to the comic book community?

Petrucha: You said it in the question – community. They’re a place to gather, make friends, talk comics and see how much is really out there.

Gladfelter: Comic Books.  Duh!

Where do you plan to spend Halloween ComicFest 2017?

Gladfelter: In a safe place!
